I know that the misspelling of "no authoriSation" is a site problem, I just get tired of seeing it so often. I will try to post something and it will go to a "website not responding" page, where it says click back or reload. I will go back, so I don't lose everything I typed, then I click submit again, and I will get the "website not responding" page again. So I click back, hit submit again, then I get the no authorization to proceed screen, so I know it finally posted. Next I click on the discussion forums to see how many times I actually posted the thread, sometimes it is only once, sometimes it is every time I hit submit. My question is: Is this in part due to my slow dial up connection (28k), or is this a problem with AOL, or is it with the web site?

If only it were that simple.
In addition to hosting the M4x4A website, the server the M4x4A site resides on also hosts a number of websites and services for other (paying) customers - among those services includes email for their domains.. often from potential clients/sales.
Thus, I need to handle a lot of legitimate mail.. but it pales in comparison to the junk that gets fed through the machine that has to be dealt with on some basis, too.
I tried filtering/processing the SPAM for a while.. and found that, with this particular product, it bogged the server down even more and created a backlog, since it took more CPU to filter than it did to just save it to a file.
I have some ideas that should help alleviate the SPAM problem, but I want to implement them on the new server, and test for a little bit, instead of trying it out in "production" (and losing what could be important emails).
Just one more thing on my list.

is it possible to make it so that someone has to register to e-mail your site? or is it not the site that is attracting the extra e-mail?[addsig]

I hate spam. After my company put my e-mail address on their web page I have been getting 40 or so junk mails a day.
Glad it's a little more responsive..
Lucky you at 40 or so.. I must delete 300 a day..

so, this has me wondering, is there something that can be done to the big 4X4 computer to help it handle the site?
Single biggest improvement we could make - eliminate SPAM. The machine has been choking on a backlog of 150,000 cans of spam for a week or two now. I've been trying to clean things out, but the cleaning process takes CPU time, too.
Next biggest thing we could do - find me more hours in the day so I can finish getting the new (bigger/faster/better) box configured and change out the Celeron 533/512MB for the Athlon 900/640MB with about 3 or 4 major OS upgrades and a whole group of bigger/faster hard drives in a RAID array so a single drive won't kill the box, AND it's faster.
I've been frustrated by the performance, too.
I did take a few steps today to try and limit how many resources the mail backlog will use though it may make the backlog bigger, which will make the problem worse.
We'll see.[addsig]

okay, new post in an old thread, same relation...
so, i have been grumbling about how this site has been moving so slow with my computer and connection... i was at bresnan, and tried out their demo computer with bresnan online cable modem, long story short, yes, it did load pages a little faster, but when replying, she bogged down, and moved slow enough that i was affraid i was going to see that annoying white screen saying that the server was busy.
so, this has me wondering, is there something that can be done to the big 4X4 computer to help it handle the site?[addsig]

Handy hint for ya,

:
Just before you get ready to "submit"...
Copy your posting to the clipboard or other various word processing program.
That way if it doesn't go through, you can just start over and "paste" the previous information.
That process has come in handy for me a few times.
BTW,
I also "bailed" on the "visual mode".

s/w - software. Upgrading the site software can be a pain.. hopefully the next upgrade won't be as bad as the previous (somehow we got stuck with a non-upgradeable installation that required a lot of hand-tweaking by ME to the data to fix it all so it'd work).
If it's bein' slow, must be time to throw more hardware at it, though I haven't really been monitoring what, if anything, is making it slow at all.
For all I know it's the SPAM trapping s/w I installed for email, unrelated to the site.
I've only used the Visual Editing mode once - I never use IE, and it's not available for Netscape. I thought I'd turned VE off or something since I'd never seen it.

Tom, are you going to post those pics today?

Well, I am glad to know that I am not the only one. Sometimes I get this problem when I am the only one on here.[addsig]
2109
Me too, now that I know better
[addsig]
2108
The 6 people that are on it right now seems to be boging it, and I feel that the visual mode is unneeded; but the site seems to work very well.
What is s/w?[addsig]
2107
I only use viaual mode if I am editing, it's easier to see for fixing things[addsig]
2106
I get the NoAuth now and then, too.
I *thought* it was primarily because I tend to open a dozen messages at once, then go back and read Message1 while Message2-12 are still loading..
If I start a reply on one message, then start a reply on a second, one or the other will fail.
I guess you're wanting me to look at upgrades to the site s/w again, eh? [addsig]
2104
Ya, I never use that new visual mode. It never wanted to work right for me.[addsig]
2102
thanks I'll try that.
hey it worked, amazing!

I can use smilies if i click cancel when it asks me if i want to use visual mode.[addsig]

Bri, I have had simular problems also, I can not post any smiley faces or pics of any kind, it says i need to debug my message, blah blah, just make it work tom. ha ha ha[addsig]
